The Science Behind Goal Setting

Every successful and ambitious person I’ve met set goals.

But I wonder if goals are just a “feel good” thing or if there’s scientifically proven benefit.

So I did a bit of reading.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a tonne of research showing how goal-setting changes the way our own brain functions.

Here’s exactly what goal setting does:

  1. Goal setting alters the structure of your brain
  2. The emotional brain (amygdala) evaluates the importance of the goal
  3. The rational brain (frontal lobe) tracks the specifics of the goal
  4. The emotional and rational brain work together to keep you focused and motivated
  5. All of this alters how you behave that causes you to achieve your goals
  6. Challenging goals alter your brain structure faster than easy/loose goals.

So, goal setting is literally brain-changing (and life-changing).

If you haven’t already, I urge you to take some time to set out your ambitious goals for this year.

And while you do that, I’ll leave you with a relevant motivational quote by Bernard Cline

“It’s better to dare to dream big and achieve half of your dreams than to dream small and achieve them all.”

Understanding the AI Hype Let’s talk AI for a moment. Because I feel like it’s so grossly misunderstood and its hype is confusing. If you used Google Translate, Apple Siri or even a robot vacuum cleaner, these are all elements of AI that we know and love. So in fact, you and I have been using AI for a while! It’s not like AI has suddently arrived is becoming the Singularity (a hypothetical future where technological growth becomes uncontrollable). But the trend a decade ago was to hide the AI...

Today’s Newsletter Partnered With ClearVPN 2 Living The Best Life I’ve been thinking about how I want to live life and best use my time. The easiest way to break down life is into categories: Relationships Work & Finances Health Learning Mental Wellbeing Over the last half year, I’ve been consumed by work – putting in countless hours, weekends and not drawing a line. I’ve been over indexing on work. Recently I’ve taken time to balance the life categories, where I’d choose to work late nights...
